Hidden Treasures: Western Highlights from the University of Arizona Museum of Art

Curated into three collections, the exhibition will include paintings of the American West in both traditional and contemporary styles by Frederic Remington, William Robinson Leigh, Jimmy Swinnerton, Ernest Blumenschein, Maynard Dixon, Luis Jimenez, Gunnar Widforss, Peter Hurd, and Carlos Vierra. The exhibition’s second grouping will feature premier collection of works on paper providing an intimate look at western subjects seen through the eyes of American Indian artists from the 1930s to the 2000s. Fritz Scholder, R. C. Gorman, Emmi Whitehorse, Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Kay Walkingstick, and Melanie Yazzie portray the West through the lens of his or her own personal story illustrating the great variety of concerns by Native artists working in the West May 30th – Oct. 4th 2015. The third grouping of historic works by women Western artists, exhibited together for the first time, woodcuts of Norma Bassett Hall, etchings by Gene Kloss, and works on paper by Ila McAfee, Dorothy Curtis Kent, and more.
