Once again the Mata Ortiz artisans from Mexico will be in the Museum’s Learning Center Friday, January 13 through Sunday, January 15. Join us for the “The Arts of Mata Ortiz and Oaxaca” Trunk Show featuring the pottery of Jerardo Tena Savdoval, Norma Cecilia Hernandez Lucero, Mariela Tena Hernandez, Luis Enrique Ortiz Olivas. They will demonstrate the firing of pottery throughout the weekend. Visit with master silversmith Agustin Beltran Torres, Torres makes the Mata Ortíz shard jewelry with Taxco silver and is from the city of Taxco in the state of Guerrero in Mexico. And, a crowd favorite, Master Weaver Porfirio Gutierrez will be returning with his dazzling textiles as well.

The trunk sale in the CCLC is open and free to the public, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. For all Museum members, please join us for a members-only preview at 9 a.m. on Friday January 13.
Julia Fuentes Santiago was born in the village of San Martin Tilcajete, Oaxaca in 1976. Julia is the daughter of the world famous Master Carver Epifanio Fuentes and Laurencia Santiago. She began painting at a young age and was surrounded by the artistic traditions of her family since childhood. She was inspired to further her own talents as an artist and went on to study art at the prestigious Bellas Artes of Oaxaca. She graduated as an instructor of fine art in 1999.
