The Emancipation Proclamation was a curious document. President Abraham Lincoln declared that enslaved people were freed in Confederate states as of January 1, 1863. Yet the Union had no control over the Confederate states in 1863, and no one was set free as a result of the Emancipation Proclamation. Why did he issue it? And what significance does it hold today? Eduardo Pagán, the Sigler Museum Curator of History will explore the history and meaning of this historic document.
