The DCWM is proud to host the exhibition Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater: the Arizona Highways Collection Presented by SRP opening Saturday, October 1 and will be on view in the main museum through March 5, 2023. The exhibition will include more than 40 of Goldwater’s original framed photographic prints along with background information about Goldwater’s career as a photographer.
Barry M. Goldwater (1909-1998) was famous for serving five terms as U.S. Senator from Arizona (1953–1965, 1969–1987) and was the Republican Party nominee for president of the United States in 1964. However, many of his closest friends and family knew him as a rugged and avid photographer whose work was published in “Arizona Highways” magazine for decades.
Goldwater stated in 1964 that his “picture taking now covers a span of thirty years. During this time I have accumulated over 3,000 negatives of Arizona alone, as well as countless others of different parts of the world. With the addition of colored motion pictures and transparencies, they have been taken primarily to record what Arizona looked like during the years of my life”. This exhibition is curated by Alison Goldwater Ross, Barry Goldwater’s granddaughter and founder and Executive Director of the Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation. We are honored to bring this collection to our visitors. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor SRP (Salt River Project), Scottsdale Museum of the West, and The Barry and Peggy Goldwater Foundation. Funding for the Wickenburg presentation provided in part by Arizona Commission on the Arts, Rea and Jim Ludke, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Town of Wickenburg.
